Pecan Fest puts area in spotlight
Published April 4, 2006
SEGUIN — Nutty Buddy is having a crisis.
His special pecan got mixed up with the Easter Bunny’s eggs, and he needs the help of Seguin area children to find it.
Nutty Buddy squirrel is the Pecan Fest mascot who will scurry around Central Park from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, as part of the Sixth Annual Pecan Fest.
“We’ve moved it downtown, so this will be the first year to have it at Central Park,” said Sherry Nefford, event coordinator. “People can bring their lawn chairs and listen to the bands while they have fun and shop at the booths. We have craft vendors, and we have some food booths. We’ve also invited the Relay for Life teams to have booths.”
Pape Pecan House will set up a booth to sell its new gourmet virgin pecan oil, chocolate-covered pecans and shelled and in-shell pecans.
“I think Pecan Fest has a great impact on Guadalupe County,” said John Pape. “This county has always been connected with pecans.”
Entries for the Pecan Fest Bake Show may be turned in 9-10:30 a.m. at the Information Booth at Central Park. Cookies, bars, candies, pies, cakes, yeast and quick breads will be judged in youth and adult divisions.
Entries must have at least 1 cup of pecans and be placed in a disposable, covered dish, with a typed or neatly printed recipe card including the entrant’s name, address and telephone number on the back.
Contestants may enter as many items as they wish. All entries become the property of the Pecan Fest Committee and will go on sale to the public at 1 p.m.
Proceeds will be used to benefit the Pecan Fest event.
Visitors can enjoy Miss Suzi’s School of Dance “Nutcracker Street” Hip Hop performance at 9 a.m., followed at 10 a.m., by Chris Rybak, the “Accordion Cowboy,” and his polka music. Continuing the entertainment at noon is the Shiner Hobo Band.
The children’s Easter egg hunt for Nutty Buddy’s missing pecan is scheduled for 3 p.m., with prizes and surprises in each egg and a special treat for the child finding the special pecan.
Those with a penchant for unusual noises can enter the squirrel calling contest at 4 p.m., followed up by an awards ceremony at 5 p.m.
For a day of “nutty” fun, head to downtown Seguin and enjoy this year’s Pecan Fest.
