Wet weather is possible for Easter holiday

Published April 10, 2009

SEGUIN — Those initially wanting to hunt for eggs at home this Easter Sunday may be forced to move the festivities up a day or two — or possibly indoors.

Forecasters say that a front will be rumbling through the area this weekend, bringing thunderstorms and maybe even some hail to Seguin just around the time that Easter baskets are often readied for an annual stuffing.

“Easter weekend it looks like a storm system will be coming across from west to east and impact the area, it looks like, probably late Saturday night and into the daytime on Sunday,” said forecaster Jim Ellis. “It’s basically what we call a mid- and upper-level trough across Texas. That will generate a good chance of showers and thunderstorms for this particular area and it does look like there will be potential for severe storms at this time.

“There would probably even be some large hail (within the storm front).”

Ellis said that hail would be a possibility in the Seguin area, but that it was too soon to anticipate where the largest hail might fall — or if it would end up affecting Seguin at all. One thing that he said looked to be a certainty, though, was that folks waking up on Easter Sunday would be greeted by wet conditions and a potentially loud wake-up call.

“They might be waking up to some claps of thunder and some heavy downpours,” Ellis said. “Currently, rain chances in the Seguin area late Saturday night would be 40 percent, increasing to 60 percent Sunday morning. On Saturday (during the day) there’s a slight chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon for Seguin and a chance of rain of 30 percent.”

Ellis noted that medium to high winds might also accompany the front on Sunday, bringing gusts of up to 25 miles per hour. Temperatures likely won’t be affected by the storm too much, however, as they will look to stay consistent throughout the weekend following a slight dip relative to Wednesday and Thursday’s daily highs.

“Saturday, we’re looking for highs around 77 and then low Saturday night around 64,” Ellis said. “In the daytime on Sunday, probably a high of around 80 and a low that night around 53.”

There’s no doubt that the low-pressure system, if it does make itself known early Sunday morning, would affect plans for some of those wishing to spend the day outside. Some churches, like Forest Hills Baptist, have even set up Easter egg hunts following Sunday morning late services, which would have to be altered to avoid a messy conclusion to the holiday.

But far be it from the local houses of worship to let a little bad weather dampen its congregation members’ spirits.

“The alternate plan is to move indoors,” said Forest Hills’ Tammy Johnson. “But if it’s not raining, we’ll still be outside.”
