Pets deserve good health, too

Published April 10, 2009

Pets can’t tell you when they’re feeling under the weather, so it’s easy for animal ailments to slip below the radar. But, just like people, cats and dogs need the occasional check-up.

Most pet owners would agree that their furry family members are wonderful companions who they’d like to keep around for years. However, vet bills can be pricey and even important vaccinations and city registration can be forgotten in the day-to-day rush.

That’s where Well Pet Month comes in. In an effort to help out the community, the city of Seguin teamed up with four local veterinarian clinics to offer low-cost examinations, vaccinations and licensing to area residents, beginning on Monday, April 13.

All cat and dog owners residing within the city limits are required to register their pets in the city’s database, and the county requires that all pets be vaccinated for rabies annually.

During Well Pet Month, for $40 pet owners can defend their family friends from diseases such as parvo (a puppy disease), cat distemper and rabies. It’s also a chance for them to get a check-up and updated tags to keep stay in good standing with the city or county.

Unlike the more-common one-day clinics, Well Pet Month allows doctors to take time with each “patient” and look for injuries or signs of illness that could become serious down the road.

Vaccinating the cute and cuddly family members isn’t just a good thing for pets, but also for the people who love them. Protecting them against rabies also helps to keep you and your family safe from the disease that can be transmitted from animal to animal and even to humans. Not complying with the rabies vaccination requirements can also lead to a hefty fine.

Being a responsible pet owner is about more than feeding, watering and exercising your animal. It’s also important to make sure that your four-legged companion is healthy and happy.

So don’t forget your pets – call and make an appointment this month with your

veterinarian.
