Seguin 8’s defeated by Hallettsville
Published June 23, 2009
NEW BRAUNFELS — The Seguin Little League’s 8-year-old All-Star squad saw its memorable postseason run come to end at the hands of Hallettsville 8’s on Sunday in the Texas District 31 championship.
The Hallettsville Little League squad swept two games from the Guadalupe County boys, winning 5-2 Saturday in Hallettsville before securing the district title with a 6-5 win in New Braunfels on Sunday.
The Seguin All-Stars found themselves in the championship series after posting an undefeated record en route to the district’s West Zone championship last week.
Rawson Young led the charge at the plate for the Seguin youngsters during the two-game series. Young went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs over the weekend.
Kyle Kolbe also had multiple hits, picking up a single in each of the two games played.
In the series opener in Hallettsville, the local pitcher made things quite difficult for the Seguin batters, as the Guadalupe boys could only muster four hits during the six-inning contest.
Hallettsville opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, only to lose its lead when Seguin pushed two runs of its own across the plate in the top of the third.
Young led off the inning with a double and came home on Kolbe’s RBI single. Kolbe came home later in the inning on an RBI fielder’s choice by Jordan Montoya.
Kendall Harborth added a single later in the game.
Montoya, the team’s starting pitcher, struck out two batters. Colby Newman struck out three in relief.
In game two over in Comal County, Seguin scored two runs in the second to take the early lead. Ryley Brooks scored the first run of the game, and then Young put the second run on the scoreboard with an RBI single that scored Hayden Haas, who doubled in the inning.
Brooks started on the mound and struck out six batters on his own.
Hallettsville scored one run in the third inning and then took advantage of multiple errors and recorded a five-run frame in the fourth.
Seguin fought back in the fifth as Haas, Young and Bryan Butler all scored.
Young scored on Arturo Villamil’s RBI double.
Stratton Pounds, Braeden Trost, Matthew Weichold and Roman Flores also suited up for Seguin in the series.
