Zumba pro turns up the beat for Relay
Published February 10, 2010
GERONIMO — Many people would associate walking around a track with Relay for Life.
But here, locals will be able to get their hearts beating faster as a preview for the annual cancer research fundraiser.
Zumba dance instructor, Veronica Carter of the Guadalupe Regional Wellness Center and Barbara Behal, American Cancer Society volunteer, are inviting everyone to come out and “shake it” for a good cause.
On Feb. 20 from 9-11 a.m. at the Geronimo Community Center, 280 Navarro, Zumba instructor Jeni J from Tampa, Fla. will be teaching a two-hour Master Class as part of a Relay For Life fundraiser.
Combining the exercise regiment with the charity event is the perfect way to get the word out to be healthier, Behal said.
“Through this we are spreading the word both ways that you need to exercise,” she said. “The American Cancer society does promote exercise and wellness and good health, proper nutrition and we are combining that with the Zumba to raise money for that.”
Jeni J has been giving lessons for five years and is famous in the world of Zumba, Carter said.
So, when Jeni J offered her services, Carter said she jumped on the opportunity.
“I actually met Jeni two years ago at the Zumba convention and we hit it off very well,” Carter said. “When we were at the last convention in October I mentioned ‘I wish you could come to Texas, but I don’t know if we could afford you,’ and she said ‘Veronica, for you I would donate my time for a charitable event and I would be glad to do that for you.’”
Zumba is a exercise regiment that combines upbeat music with fast paced moves.
Behal, who has been a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for over two decades, part of Relay for Life for one, a member of the Central Texas Regional Council, Six-State Committee chairperson and liaison for the American Cancer Society for congressional District 28, is also an avid student of Carter’s.
“I was in her first class and I have been there ever since,” she said. “Even old people can Zumba.”
During last year’s Relay for Life a demonstration of the dance was given in the early morning hours, Behal said.
“Last year we did a demonstration at Relay at 6:30 in the morning,” she said. “I was up all night long, working and walking and I still did Zumba at 6:30 in the morning.”
With this event still in the works, Carter already has big ideas for next year’s fundraising efforts.
“I have already put a bug in some of the other instructors’ ears and instead of doing the master class and bringing someone here, we’re looking to do a Zumba-thon where all of the instructors do a couple of songs,” she said. “The few that I have talked to thought it’s going to be a great idea.”
Both ladies suggest coming prepared to work it off with comfortable clothes that you can move around in, along with the proper shoes.
While the lesson will be two hours, Behal said, participants aren’t required to workout continuously.
“People don’t have to exercise the whole two hours, there will be tables to sit down and rest,” she said adding that there will also be vendor booths to wonder about.
Carter and Behal agreed that getting local business to help out with the event and spread the heathy word would benefit everyone.
“Other gyms are going to be there to promote their facilities along with health and wellness,” Carter said. “We are looking for booths that have anything to do with health. We will also be giving away door prizes”
Along with fitness gurus, another important organization will be on hand to promote wellness, Behal said.
“The American Cancer Society is going to have a table, and we are going to promote the Relay and different aspects of the American Cancer Society program,” Behal said.
Tickets for the event are $15 at the door or $10 through advanced ticket sales online at www.FlavaFitnessStudio.com/SpecialEvents .
Vendor booths are $20 and there is a limit on how many will be able to participate, Carter said. For more information about vendor booths contact Carter at 830-660-7840.
“Zumba is a lot of fun and the time goes very quickly when your exercising, moving fast and shakin’ it,” Behal said.
