Steelers look to avenge loss against Gold Sox

Published June 14, 2007

SEGUIN — The CMC Steelers baseball team remembers all too well what happened on Saturday.

They lost their first game of the season to the Austin Gold Sox.

But, the Steelers (11-1) have won three games since, and hope to win their fourth consecutive when they host the Gold Sox at 7:30 p.m. today at “Smokey” Joe Williams Field at Fairgrounds Park.

“We were missing some guys [on Saturday], and just couldn’t get the job done,” said Steelers manager David Hamilton. “We don’t like losing to anyone, and we’re going to go into this game like we do all the other games — with a business-like mindset.”

The Steelers had Wednesday off after posting three victories in three days.

They beat the San Antonio Titans, 7-1, on Sunday, whipped the Austin Phantoms, 13-2, in seven innings on Monday, and edged the Austin Collegians, 7-5, on Tuesday.

Hector Delgadillo is expected to start on the hill for the Steelers. He has a 2-0 record this season.

Hamilton also believes tonight’s game is pivotal in the Zaragosa League standings.

“We’re 11-1, and the Gold Sox are 5-3,” he said. “We need to win this one to put some distance between them and us.”

Monday’s win over the Phantoms was the Steelers’ sixth 10-run rule victory of the season. They scored runs in all but one inning, and took advantage of six errors, 10 walks and seven wild pitches.

Seguin product Chris Collazo also made the most of his pinch hit appearance as he went 2-for-3 with a trio of RBIs, including a game-clinching two-run double in the bottom of the seventh.

The hit was his second game-clincher of the season.

Collazo, who is accustomed to playing with an aluminum bat, is adjusting to the wooden version rather well.

“When you hit with an aluminum bat, you can make the ball go just about anywhere,” Collazo said. “But with the wooden bat, you have to hit with a certain spot to make the ball go where you want it to. You have to find that sweet spot, and I found it on the last at-bat.”

Collazo hit a single in the fifth, recorded an RBI on a sacrifice in the sixth, and recorded a two-run double in the seventh.

The Steelers led 10-2 entering the bottom of the seventh when they put together the game-closing spurt.

Brian Duncan and Chris Pacheco drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning before Kyle Gimbler drew a one-out walk to load the bases for Dustin Walls.

Walls hit into a fielder’s choice to score Duncan before Collazo hit a double to left field, which scored both Pacheco and Walls.

In the bottom of the first, the Steelers began to feast on the Phantoms’ walks and errors as Pacheco drew a leadoff walk, and Elliot Babcock reached base on an error.

Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice from Dresch before scoring on a double by Walls to make it 2-0.

The Phantoms were once again plagued by the error bug in the second as Tyler Betts reached base on a two-out blunder before moving to second on a Pacheco single, and scoring on a single by Babcock to make it 3-0.

Pacheco and Babcock both scored on a double by Dresch to make it 5-0.

In the fourth, Betts hit a one-out single and moved to second on an outfield error on the play before advancing to third on a sacrifice by Pacheco, and scoring on a passed ball to make it 6-2.

The Phantoms scored both of their runs in the top of the fourth on a trio of singles and an error.

The top of the fourth also marked the end of the night for Steelers starter Brett Gips, who gave up a pair of runs on six hits and four walks while striking out seven in 3.2 innings of work.

Gimbler relieved Gips and threw 2.1 innings before making two pinch hit appearances in the sixth and seventh innings. He drew a pair of walks, and scored a run.

The Steelers added another run in the bottom of the fifth when Walls led off with a single before moving to third on a single by Collazo and scoring on a fielder’s choice by Seguin product Casey Zamora.

Zamora, who played catcher for the Steelers on Monday, was 0-for-4 with an RBI.

Pacheco drew a walk to lead off the sixth before moving to second on an error and third on a passed ball.

He later scored on a passed ball to make it 8-2.

Babcock drew a walk and stole second and third bases before scoring on a sacrifice by Collazo. Gimbler, who drew a walk following Babcock, scored on an error which landed Zamora safely on first to make it 10-2.

Walls also had multiple hits as he was 2-for-4 with a hit batsman and three RBIs.

Dresch was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
