SEGUIN — A collision between a pickup and a semi-tractor trailer claimed the life of an 80-year-old La Vernia man Thursday.
Wendell Eugene Despain was pronounced dead at 2:38 p.m. at University Hospital in San Antonio, Seguin police said.
Police said Despain had lacerations to his head and left arm as a result of the collision, which occurred at the intersection of State Highway 46 and Farm to Market 725 at 11:33 a.m.
Despain was traveling westbound on FM 725 in a white Toyota pickup when he attempted to make a left turn onto southbound Highway 46.
Before Despain could complete the left turn, he was hit by the semi-tractor trailer going northbound on Highway 46, police said.
Authorities said the semi-tractor trailer, which is registered to Adams Trucking Company of Livingston, Texas, was driven by Timothy Havard, 44, of Lufkin.
Seguin Police Department Patrolman Shane Burkhart said Havard was trying to stop the semi-tractor trailer before the accident occurred.
“[Havard] attempted to stop at the intersection of [Highway] 46 and [FM] 725,” Burkhart said. “[Havard] applied his brakes and slid into the intersection.”
The semi-trailer hit the driver’s side of the pickup as Despain tried to make his left turn, Burkhart said.
Skid and tire marks from the semi-tractor trailer were visible at the four-way intersection.
Burkhart said he did not believe the speed of the semi-tractor trailer was a factor in causing the collision.
The Gazette-Enterprise will have additional information on the accident in Sunday’s edition.
