GERONIMO — Needing just one win to sew up a spot in the Class 2A state playoffs, the Navarro volleyball team (19-14 overall, 5-3 in District 28-2A) got off to a hot start Tuesday night.
The Lady Panthers claimed a 25-17 win over Stockdale to begin the match, but then — without any warning — the Lady Brahmas (25-10, 4-4) flipped the script on their hosts, taking the next three sets in order to escape Geronimo with a surprisingly dominant 3-1 win (17-25, 27-25, 25-18, 25-16).
“They flat outplayed us in every aspect of the game,” said Navarro head coach Jackie Baker. “Defensively, offensively, transition, communication — you name it, they outplayed us.”
After claiming a 1-0 lead in the match, Navarro was challenged in game two, as the teams battled back and forth late in the set.
Eventually, Stockdale emerged with a 27-25 win to tie the contest — a victory that Baker says began with her team’s reluctance to assert themselves.
“We should have won game two, but we played too safe,” she said. “We didn’t go for the win, and when you’re that close you’ve got to go for the win, and when you play safe, you make errors.”
Game three was also won by the visitors, as Stockdale raced out to a lead as big as 20-11 before fending off a late attack from senior Sydawnie Douglass.
Douglass followed back-to-back kills with a pair of blocks that pulled her team within five points, but the Lady Brahmas still cruised to a 25-18 win.
The fourth game looked as if it would definitely belong to the Lady Panthers, as Navarro notched the first five points of the set before later holding a 7-1 lead.
But sure enough, Stockdale answered back with a fury, scoring 15 of the next 19 points to take a 16-11 lead that it would not relinquish.
The quick turn of events left Baker and every Panther fan in the crowd seemingly asking themselves the exact same question — how did that just happen?
“If I knew, I would have fixed it,” Baker said. “We couldn’t refocus — we just let down and Stockdale played a great match and we didn’t rise to the challenge.”
Douglass had a solid match for Navarro, leading her squad with 14 kills and adding three aces, five blocks and seven digs. Kandace Newton recorded a team-high 19 assists, while Hayley Franzen contributed 18 digs in the loss.
Although the Lady Panthers failed to clinch a playoff berth Tuesday, they’re still in a very good position to do so, needing a victory in either of their final two regular season matches to make it in.
Both of those matches come at home against the bottom two teams in the district (Kenedy and Karnes City), with Navarro first hosting the Lady Lions at 6 p.m. on Friday.
