NISD board votes to change 2008-09 calendar

Published March 28, 2008

GERONIMO — Navarro ISD agricultural science students may find themselves especially busy next January.

NISD Board President David Reiley, who is also the agricultural science teacher at Seguin High School, noticed a mid-January conflict on district’s 2008-09 calendar during Monday’s regular meeting.

“That Wednesday, Thursday and Friday is the Youth Show and we have fall exams scheduled for the same time,” he said.

This year, more than 90 NISD students participated in the Guadalupe County Youth Show, which will coincide with next year’s exam schedule.

The district’s trustees recently approved next year’s academic calendar, which would move the end of the fall semester to after the winter holidays in order to make the fall and spring semesters similar in length.

Superintendent Dee Carter said several other districts, including Seguin ISD, have adopted similar schedules to even out the semesters within the bounds of state regulations. However, she said when a district committee created the calendar, no one noticed the conflict with the youth show.

“The teachers wanted a period of review after students get back from winter holidays,” she said, explaining why exams weren’t scheduled directly after the break. “So we’ll have to find a way to make accommodations for those students.”

John Gary, principal of Navarro High School, said his students are those most likely to be taking semester exams and also to be participating in the youth show.

“We have quite a few who participate, are affiliated with it or distracted by it,” he said. “I think we could approach the teachers to allow those students to take exams early.”

The board had no objections to the calendar in general, which includes an Aug. 25, start date and a final day of class on June 4.

The Class of 2009 is scheduled to graduate on June 5, a Friday.

Spring break, from March 9-13, will coincide with Seguin ISD and Texas Lutheran University calendars. Student holidays include Labor Day, Columbus Day, a five-day weekend for Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Good Friday and Memorial Day.
